Arlene Saunders proves her mettle in metals. When Michael Plotkin, founder and president of Allied Metal Spinning died in 1983, ownership and operating control was passed to his daughter, Arlene Saunders.

Established in 1945, Allied Metal Spinning Corporation began its life as a small shop in the Bronx creating specialized fixtures for the lighting industry. A few years later, Michael Plotkin was approached to produce a tray suitable for baking a pizza crust that Andrew Virga recently developed. An oven in which to bake the pizza crust was being developed by Virga's friend, Ira Nevins. Thus, came the first pizza crust, the first pizza pan and the first pizza oven (from Bakers Pride).

Plotkin dropped his lighting line and began developing and manufacturing a line of pizzaoriented smallwares and supplies. He originated the now-common pizza cutter, and in the 50s and 60s, he diversified his product offerings to include woks, steamers and a line of bakery items.

Although Saunders had worked in the plant and office over several years, she was not totally prepared for the metal manufacturing business she would inherit. Being a teacher trade, she taught herself the metal business–learning about both aluminum and steel. Her astuteness in business matters and her empathy for people have guided her company's growth.

In the 20+ years since Arlene Saunders took control of Allied Metal Spinning, she has turned it from a small, regional shop into a leading national manufacturer and distributor, offering 4,000 items for the pizza and bakery industries. From layer pans, pan extenders, cutters, racks, scoops, cake rings, peels/proofing boards, pastry tools–the list of items available from Allied Metal Spinning Corporation is endless. The company has 50 employees and operates its own tool and die shop for custom orders. A complete catalog is published yearly and a new website is under construction.

Finding the right pan for a customer's product is a way of life. In the manufacturing industry, a multitude of changes, intense competition and increased consolidation abound, but Allied Metal Spinning's Arlene Saunders continues her father's legacy of providing top quality products, top quality customer service and competitive pricing.
