A member of ABA’s safety committee spoke with a representative of the Chemical Safety Board (CSB) in early September to assess possible action steps the baking industry can take to prevent combustible dust explosion hazards. The CSB held a public meeting on Sept. 24 as it prepared to finalize its report and recommendations on the 2008 Imperial Sugar explosion and fire. As part of its report, the CSB is reaching out to trade organizations representing industries that may deal with dust related issues. As such, the CSB is making the recommendation that ABA “actively prompt improvements in combustible dust hazard awareness and control throughout the wholesale baking industry by publishing bulletins or safety guidance that address combustible dust characteristics including: ignition energy, minimum (explosive) concentration, best practices for minimizing dust accumulation and safe housekeeping practices.”

With access to online toolkits, members can have a direct impact on influencing the debate over Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). Now is the time to regroup and reiterate the message to Congress about the negative impacts EFCA will have on our economy and ability to create more jobs for Americans, according to the IBA.
